Let us first recall the Dugundji Extension Theorem (DET): Every continuous mapping from a closed subset \(A\) of a metric space \(X\) into a normed space \(Y\) has a continuous extension from \(X\) into \(Y\). The main result of this paper proves versions of DET under the weak assumption that Y is an ``\(\alpha\)-weakly convex'' metric space. The concept of (local) \(\alpha\)-weak convexity is studied. It is shown that every (local) \(\alpha\)-weakly convex metric space is an (ANR-space) AR-space. As an application, Granas' theory of topological essentiality in (local) \(\alpha\)-weakly convex metric spaces is given. Additional applications to fixed-point theory and a metric version of the Leray-Schauder Theorem are given. References to the work of Himmelberg and Granas as well as other related works are given.
