For an arbitrary module, it is proved that the existence and countability of the Krull dimension are together equivalent to the existence of a countable bound on the ordinal lengths of well-ordered descending chains of submodules. Moreover, explicit upper and lower bounds, in terms of the Krull dimension, are established for the ordinal lengths of such chains. Examples are constructed to show that in general these bounds are best possible.
