Complex projective threefolds having the same integral homology groups as \({\mathbb{P}}^ 3\) are classified. This classification is used to improve a result of Fujita on manifolds whose integral cohomology ring is the same as that of \({\mathbb{P}}^ k\) and applies to the problem of classifying polarized manifolds (X,A), A being a nonsingular hypersurface such that \(H_ i(A,{\mathbb{Z}})\simeq H_ i(X,{\mathbb{Z}})\) for \(i\leq 2 \dim A\).
