The purpose of this paper is to study the representation of marked Riemann surfaces by Schottky groups. There is a natural topology of the space of marked Riemann surfaces of a given type, and also on the set of Schottky groups of a given type. The author poses the question of the continuity of the natural projection map. This is not in general continuous although circumstances can be given in which it is. The author's main result is to construct, for a given Schottky group, a finite set of further Schottky groups so that the image of each of these under the projection map is in the closure of the image of the first group. It does not seem impossible that the author's methods give an equivalence relation on the set of marked Riemann surfaces so that the natural projection into the quotient is continuous.
