Let M be a II\({}_ 1\)-factor with separable predual and N a subfactor of M with property T. If \(N'\cap M={\mathbb{C}}\) then the fundamental group of M is countable. Let N be a \(II_ 1\)-factor with separable predual and property T, and let \(\alpha\) be an outer action of the discrete group K on N. Then the crossed product \(W^*(N,\alpha,K)\) has countable fundamental group. Let A be a finite von Neumann algebra with separable predual and let \(\alpha\) be an action on A of the ICC group G with property T, preserving a faithful normal trace. If the action is ergodic then the crossed product \(W^*(A,\alpha,G)\) is a \(II_ 1\)-factor with countable fundamental group. Let G be a TICC group, \(\alpha\) an outer action of a countable group K on the group factor R(G), and let \(N=W^*(R(G),\alpha,K)\). Then Out N is a locally compact group of which the connected component of the identity is topologically isomorphic to the connected component of the identity to Hom(K,\({\mathbb{T}}).\) Examples are described of a factor without property T of which the fundamental group is countable, and of a \(II_*\)-factor with nonisomorphic tensor powers.
