An irreducible symmetric bounded domain with Bergman metric has the following two properties on its curvatures: (i) The sectional curvature is non-positive; (ii) The curvature operator has at most two distinct eigenvalues. A symmetric bounded domain is an example of a homogeneous bounded domain in \({\mathfrak C}^ N\). The author proves that an irreducible bounded domain is symmetric if the property (ii) above is satisfied. [The sufficiency of property (i) above has been proved by \textit{J. F. D'Atri} and \textit{I. Dotti Miatello} in Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 276, 531-540 (1983; Zbl 0517.32014).] The proof is done by analyzing the normal j-algebra to which the homogeneous bounded domain corresponds.
