The authors prove that if L is a finite lattice and r is a rank function on L then there is a finite geometric lattice S containing L such that r is the height function of S restricted to L. As an application, they obtain the embedding of \textit{D. T. Finkbeiner} [Can. J. Math. 12, 582-591 (1960; Zbl 0098.027)].
