The authors deal with a certain aspect of the inverse problem for the Dirac system \[ \left( \begin{matrix} 0\\ -1\end{matrix} \begin{matrix} 1\\ 0\end{matrix} \right)y'+Q(x)y=\lambda y\quad (-\infty <x<\infty) \] which consists in recovering the symmetric matrix potential Q(x) (with zero trace) from the matrix spectral function on the whole axis. This paper is in some sense parallel to that of \textit{B. M. Levitan} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 234, 22-25 (1977; Zbl 0377.34017)] on the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem.
