Let \((M,g_{ij})\) be a Riemannian manifold. The Riemannian manifold M has nonnegative curvature operator, if the symmetric linear map \[ Rm: \Lambda^ 2(M)_ p\to \Lambda^ 2(M)_ p, \] defined by \(Rm(\phi)_{ij}=g^{km} g^{\ln} R_{ijkl} \phi_{mn}\), \(\phi \in \Lambda^ 2(M)_ p\), has nonnegative eigenvalues for every \(p\in M\). We say that a Kähler manifold has nonnegative curvature operator, if the underlying Riemannian manifold has nonnegative curvature operator. The main result of the present paper is the following theorem: If M is a compact simply connected irreducible Kähler manifold with nonnegative curvature operator, then M is either isometric to a Hermitian symmetric manifold or biholomorphic to the complex projective space \({\mathbb{C}}P^ n.\) For a proof, if M is not an isometric Hermitian symmetric space, by Hamilton's result [\textit{R. S. Hamilton}, Four-manifolds with positive curvature operator (to appear in J. Differ. Geom.)] the authors show that M has positive bisectional curvature by deforming the original Kähler metric. Then, by Mori [\textit{S. Mori}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 110, 593-606 (1979; Zbl 0423.14006)], M is biholomorphic to \({\mathbb{C}}P^ n\).
