This paper is a continuation of two papers of the same author [Math. Z. 184, 549-572 (1983; Zbl 0524.14018); 187, 209-219 (1984; Zbl 0575.14030)], where a complete classification of smooth surfaces of degree at most 7 in \({\mathbb{P}}^ 4\) is given. Here a complete classification of smooth surfaces of degree 8 in \({\mathbb{P}}^ 4\) is presented; namely, it is shown that such a surface, which is not a complete intersection, belongs to one of the four families A, B, C, D, precisely described. Then the existence of the surfaces of type B, C, D is proved. For the proofs the author uses the adjunction mapping, the Serre-correspondence and the theory of liaison. Finally, the numerical invariants of the smooth surfaces of degree 8 in \({\mathbb{P}}^ 4\) are given.
