Instabilities of an one-dimensional and a single-species Vlasov-Poisson system is examined numerically by three simulation methods: two of them taking the continuum of particles while the third one is based on particle-in-cell procedure. The treatment is applied to the cold two- stream instability and the importance of the relevant Hamiltonian structure for achieving accurate solutions of the initial-value problem is discussed.
