A function f on a coordinate chart U with coordinate system \(\{z_ 1,...,z_ n\}\) on a complex Kähler manifold V with Kähler form \(i\partial {\bar \partial}\phi\) is called nearly holomorphic on U, if f is a polynomial in \(\partial \phi /\partial z_ j\) (1\(\leq j\leq n)\) with holomorphic functions on U as coefficients. In an earlier paper of the author, a class of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms with `non- analytic' Eisenstein series as prototypes was studied extensively; although nonholomorphic, these behave arithmetically quite like holomorphic automorphic forms. This paper is devoted to a detailed investigation of nearly holomorphic functions in the natural context of Hermitian symmetric spaces D. For such D of compact and non-exceptional type and especially, for a complex projective space, the structure of everywhere nearly holomorphic functions is determined. A principal result concerns the arithmeticity, in a natural sense, of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms f and their images under specific differential operators. Near holomorphy and arithmeticity are then proved for certain Eisenstein series on tube domains attached to products of Sp(m,\({\mathbb{R}})\) or SU(m,m). Finally, the structure of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms on products of half-planes relative to a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field is clarified in terms of holomorphic forms or nonholomorphic Eisenstein series of weight 2 for SL(2,\({\mathbb{Z}})\) and this is followed by a discussion of nearly holomorphic theta functions.
