In Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 300, 367-381 (1987; Zbl 0621.54006) we defined an adequate index n(P) for a 1-dimensional compact connected polyhedron P and we showed that \(Fd\omega^{-1}(t)\leq n(P)-1\) for any Whitney map \(\omega\) for C(P) and any \(t\in [0,\omega (P)]\). We show that the similar result is not always true if P is any n-dimensional compact connected polyhedron (n\(\geq 2)\). In fact, we show the following: Let P be any n- dimensional compact connected polyhedron (n\(\geq 2)\). Let m be any natural number such that \(m\geq 2\). Then there exists a Whitney map \(\omega\) for C(P) such that the m-sphere \(S^ m\) is homotopically dominated by \(\omega^{-1}(t)\) for some \(t\in (0,\omega (P))\). In particular, \(Fd\omega^{-1}(t)\geq m\).
