We give simple criteria for irreducibility and mutual equivalence of unitary representations of an infinite discrete group induced from finite dimensional ones of its subgroups. Our results are quite useful, in particular, in the study of irreducible representations of the infinite symmetric group, free groups and free products. In addition an analogue of Burnside's theorem is given.
