Let \(\Delta:0=x_ 0<x_ 1<...<x_ n=1\) be a partition of the interval \(I=[0,1]\). The author considers a class of almost quartic splines given as \(S\) \(*_{n,4}=\{s:s\in C^ 2(I)\), s is quintic in one of the end intervals (say \([x_ 0,x_ 1])\) and quartic in each other interval \([x_ k,x_{k+1}]\}\). The (0,2) interpolation problem \(s_{\Delta}(x_ k)=y_ k,s_{\Delta}''(x_ k)=y_ k''\) for \(k=0,...,n\) and \(s_{\Delta}'(x_ k)=y_ k'\), \(k=0,...,n\), as well as the (0,1) and (1,2) problems are treated by proving existence and uniqueness of an interpolating spline \(| S_{\Delta}^{(r)}(x)- f^{(r)}(x)| \leq Kh^{3-r}\omega_ 4(h)\), \(r=0,1,2,3\), are established for all three types of interpolating splines, where \(f\in C^ 4(I)\) and \(\omega_ 4(h)\) is the modulus of continuity of \(f^{(4)}\). Different estimates of the constants K are also given, where \(K=Ch\) holds for some, but not all, subintervals.
