    For the system (1) \((a(t)\psi(x)x')'+q(t)f(x)= \gamma(t)\) and related equations \((2)\quad (a(t)\psi(x)x')'+cq(t)f(x)=d\gamma (t),\) \((3)\quad (a(t)\psi(x)x')'+q(t)f(x)=d\gamma (t),\) where \(a\in C[[t_ 0,\infty),(0,\infty)]\), \(q,\gamma \in C[[t_ 0,\infty),(- \infty,\infty)]\), \(\psi \in C^ 1[(-\infty,\infty),[0,\infty]]\), \(f\in C[(-\infty,\infty),(-\infty,\infty)]\), and for any \(x\neq 0\), \(\psi(x)\neq 0\), \(xf(x)>0\), c and d are positive constants. The author considers the problem of property (P) (resp. (\=P)), which enables us to know the oscillatory behavior of solutions of (1). (1) is said to have property (P), (\((\bar P)\)), if no solution of (2) ((3)) for any \(c>0\) and \(d>0\) (for any \(d>0)\) is bounded away from zero. With a difficult discussion, the author gives a series of results for property (P) or \((\bar P)\) of (1). For example, he obtains following theorem: let \(h_ 1(t)=\int^{\infty}_{t}h^ 2_ 0(s)+ds,\) \(h_{n+1}(t)=\int^{\infty}_{t}[h_ 0(s)+\alpha h_ n(s)/a^{1/2}(s)]^ 2_+ ds,\) \(t\in [t_ 0,\infty)\), \(n=1,2,... \). Where \(\alpha >0\), and \(\phi (t)_+= \max(\phi(t),0)\). Suppose that \(\int^{\infty}_{t}\psi(x)/f(x) dx<\infty,\int^{-\infty}_{- 1}\psi(x)/f(x) dx<\infty\) and for \(\{h_ n(t)\}\), the following condition is satisfied: there is an integer \(N\geq 1\) such that \(h_ n(t)\), \(n=1,2,...,N\) is defined, and \[ \limsup_{t\to \infty}\int^{t}_{t_ 0}[a^{1/2}(s)h_ 0(s)+\alpha a^{-1}(s)h_ N(s)]ds=\infty. \] Then, under some additional conditions, (1) has property (P).
