The author proves a gluing formula for the Donaldson invariants of the connected sum of two smooth 4-manifolds along embedded surfaces of higher (arbitrary) genus \(g\) and the self-intersection of one of the surfaces is zero (and the other is odd) in homology. This allows to answer in affirmative to a conjecture of \textit{J. W. Morgan} and \textit{Z. Szabó} stated in [Duke Math. J. 89, No. 3, 577-602 (1997; Zbl 0886.57016)].
