In the first part it is proved that polynomial automorphisms \(f\) are integrable if and only if the complexity of \(f\) is bounded. The complexity of \(f\) --- introduced by Arnold --- is defined by \[ A^ f_{\Gamma_ 1,\Gamma_ 2}(k)=\#\Gamma_ 1\cap f^{(k)}(\Gamma_ 2) \] where \(\Gamma_ 1,\Gamma_ 2\) are curves in general position. The second part is concerned with multiple-valued mappings \(\Phi\) and the growth of the numbers \[ N^ \Phi_ x(k)=\#\Phi^{(k)}(x) \] of the different images under the \(k\)th iteration of \(\Phi\). It is shown that for symplectic integrable \(\Phi\) the growth of \(N^ \Phi_ k(k)\) is only polynomial in \(k\) (instead of the usual exponential growth). The case of quantum integrable systems is discussed.
