Consider the operator \(P:=(-i\nabla-a)^ 2+V\) in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ n)\). The author shows that depending on the structure of the Lie algebra generated by the polynomials entering \(a\) and \(V\geq 0\), the spectrum of \(P\) consists either of a) isolated eigenvalues of finite multiplicity, or b) isolated eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity (\(+\infty\) is their sole accumulation point in both cases), or c) is purely absolutely continuous (and a half-line). The proof depends very much on results by \textit{B. Helffer} and \textit{J. Nourrigat} [Hypoellipticité maximale pour des opérateurs polynomes des champs de vecteurs (1985; Zbl 0568.35003)] and an earlier paper by the author himself [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 293, 593-603 (1986; Zbl 0601.35003)]. \{Reviewer's remark: For case a) the reader should also consult \textit{A. Iwatsuka} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 26, 357-374 (1986; Zbl 0637.35026)]\}.
