In this article (Ramanujan medal lecture 1991) the author describes, on an elementary level, the way from Kronecker's approximation theorem to Margulis' generalization to indefinite quadratic forms in at least three variables (Oppenheim's conjecture). A brief indication is given of the methods used by Margulis.
