\textit{P. Dembrowski} and the reviewer [Math. Z. 103, 239-258 (1968; Zbl 0163.424)] introduced the idea of a planar function \(f\) from a group \(G\) into a group \(H\). Here both groups have order \(n\) and the mapping \(x \to f(ux)f(x)^{-1}\) is 1-1 for each \(u\). In the known cases the planes are semi-field planes and the groups are elementary abelian and hence of prime power order. The author shows a connection with group algebras over the complex numbers. If \(G\) and \(H\) are abelian of order \(3p\), (\(p\) is a prime) and if there exists a planar function from \(G\) into \(H\), then \(p=3\).
