Shear stresses in plastic solids are limited by yielding conditions. Therefore, the Coulomb law of friction is not valid under large values of normal pressure. In these cases, the Prandtl law of friction is used. However, applications of the Prandtl law present difficulties and contradictions. Therefore, a generalization of the Prandtl friction law is proposed, according to which, in conditions of sliding, shear stress at any point of the friction surface is equal to the maximum shear stress satisfying the yielding condition.
