    Let the function \(f(n)\) be strongly additive and \(p(n)=\max_{p\mid n} p\), and denote the number of positive integers \(n\leq x\) with \(p(n)\leq y\) by \(\Psi(x,y)\). The author studies the problem of establishing a Turán-Kubilius inequality of the type \[ \sum_{n\leq x, p(n)\leq y} | f(n)-\eta_ f(x,y)|^ 2 \ll \Psi(x,y)\theta_ f(x,y) \tag{*} \] where \(\eta\) and \(\theta\) are suitably defined functions. In [J. Reine Angew. Math. 335, 180-196 (1982; Zbl 0483.10050)], \textit{K. Alladi} established a result of the form (*) when \(\exp((\log x)^{2/3})\leq y\leq x\) whereas, in the current paper, the corresponding range of validity is \[ (\log x)^{1+\varepsilon} \leq y\leq \exp\left( {{\log x} \over {\log\log x}}\right) \] for fixed \(\varepsilon>0\) and \(x\geq x_ 0\) and the functions \(\eta\), \(\theta\) in (*) are modifications of those used by Alladi. The two authors use different approximations for \(\Psi(x,y)\), the one being employed here being that obtained by \textit{A. Hildebrand} and \textit{G. Tenenbaum} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 296, 265-290 (1986; Zbl 0601.10028)].
