This paper deals with the \(L^ p\) mapping properties of operators of the form \(\mu(H)\) where \(H=(-\Delta +| x|^ 2)\). The first theorem states that when \(\mu\) satisfies a Hörmander type condition then \(\mu(H)\) is bounded on \(L^ p({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) for \(1<p<\infty\). The proof is based on the Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory of g-functions developed for the semigroup \(e^{-tH}\). The second theorem deals with \(\mu_{\alpha}(H)\) where \(\mu_{\alpha}(s)=s^{-\alpha}e^{-ist}.\) It is proved that if \(1<p<\infty\) and \(\alpha =n| 1/p-1/2|\) then \(\mu_{\alpha}(H)\) is bounded on \(L^ p({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) and \(\mu_{n/2}(H)\) is bounded from \(H^ 1({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) into \(L^ 1({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\). Finally, an application is given to the Riesz means of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation \((i\partial_ t+H)u(x,t)=0,\) \(u(x,0)=f(x)\).
