Let X be a Banach space, and B(X) be the algebra of bounded operators on X. One determines the linear maps \(\Phi\) : B(X)\(\to B(X)\) (i) which are spectrum preserving, (ii) which are rank-preserving, (iii) and, when X is a Hilbert space, which are positivity- preserving. Roughly speaking, the results say that these linear maps are of the form \[ \Phi (T)=ATA^{-1}, \] where A: \(X\to X\) is invertible, or \[ \Phi (T)=AT^*A^{-1}, \] where A: \(X^*\to X\) is invertible.
