The authors show that the finite symplectic groups arise as quotients of the pure symplectic braid group. The proof of this results makes use of a deep result of Kantor classifying primitive linear groups generated by transvections. As an application we get a result in the inverse Galois theory: The simple group \(Sp_n(2^f)\), \(1\leq f\neq 2\), \(n\geq 10\), occurs as a Galois group over \(\mathbb{Q}\) if \(n\geq 2\varphi(2^f-1)\) for even \(f\) and \(n\geq 2\varphi(2^f+1)\) for odd \(f\). Here \(\varphi\) denotes Euler's phi-function.
