In the first part of this paper, the authors examine sufficient conditions for the contractivity and for the asymptotic stability of the true solutions of the problem \[ \begin{aligned} y'(t) & = Ly(t)+ M(t) y(t-\tau(t))+ N(t) y'(t- \tau(t)),\quad t\geq t_0;\\ y(t) & = g(t),\quad t\leq t_0,\end{aligned} \] where \(L\) is a constant \(m\times m\) complex matrix, \(M(t)\) and \(N(t)\) are complex continuous \(m\times m\) matrix-valued functions and \(g(t)\) is a \(C^1\)-continuous complex-valued function. The second part deals with a class of numerical methods which preserve the qualitative behaviour of the solutions and thus turn out to be particularly well suited for the numerical integration of the given problem and for the simulation of asymptotically stable phenomena. The authors use an approach based on the contractivity properties of the solutions and extend the contractivity requirements to the numerical solutions.
