The author considers high-speed turbulent flows of aerodynamic importance. These flows exhibit such a wide range of excited length and time scales that direct numerical simulations are all but impossible for the near future. These flows must invariably be computed based on some form of modeling. It has often been said that large eddy simulations are the most promising approach. Here the author constructs a compressible Reynolds stress model. The equations of motion are transformed (``filtered'') to use them in the large eddy simulation. The model is based on a two-equation model that appears to work well. Good results are obtained for the compressible flat plate boundary layer for Mach numbers as large as 8 and wall temperature ratios as low as 0.3, with no explicit dilatation terms.
