Consider the boundary value problem \[ (k(x)u'(x))'=F(x),\quad 0<x<1, \qquad u(0)=u_0,\quad u(1)=u_1. \] Let \(\{x_s\}_{s=\overline{0,m}}\) be a finite set of points. A numerical method is suggested for finding an approximation \(\tilde k(x)\) to \(k(x)\) under the assumption that the quantities \(\{u_s\}\) for \(\{u(x_s)\}\) and \(\{F_s\}\) for \(\{F(x_s)\}\) are observed.
