The origin of the topological invariant \(\oint_\Sigma \frac{1}{2} T_{\mu\nu} dx^\mu \wedge dx^\nu\) is studied in analogy with the theory of magnetic monopoles, and this invariant is extended to a more general case. In units of the Planck length, the topological invariant is quantized. The quantum numbers are determined by the Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees. The physical consequences of this are that the quantization of length and time are natural and rigorous results of such an approach and are connected with the spacetime defects.
