Let \(L\) be a Lie algebra over a field \(K\) and \(R\) be the enveloping algebra of \(L\). If \(M\) is an \(L\)-module, then \(M\otimes M\) is an \(L\oplus L\)-module under \((a\otimes b) (p,q)= ap\otimes b+ a\otimes bq\). \(M\otimes M\) is then an \(L\)-module using the diagonal map from \(L\) into \(L\oplus L\) and is consequently also a \(R\)-module. This action of \(R\) on \(M\otimes M\) is called the diagonal action. There is a related diagonal action of \(R\) on \(M\wedge M\). A main result of this paper is that if \(L\) is finitely generated with abelian ideal \(A\) such that \(L/A\) is finite-dimensional, then that \(L\) is finitely presented is equivalent to either \(A\otimes A\) or \(A\wedge A\) being finitely generated as \(R\)-modules under the diagonal action where \(R\) is the enveloping algebra of \(L/A\). Several other results are found concerning finitely presented algebras. One of them is a condition equivalent to being finitely represented for finitely generated metabelian Lie algebras.
