In this paper the author emphasizes that a historical approach to the teaching of calculus provides the students with a better understanding of the material than the standard approach and helps as well to introduce them to the relationship between mathematics and other aspects of our culture. He describes in some detail a course in calculus which is based on such an approach. The reviewer feels, perhaps because of the educational set up prevalent in his country, that the course suggested cannot be appreciated by a student who does calculus for the first time - - it would be appreciated at a much higher level.
