One considers the initial value problem for a Boussinesq-type equation which arises in the modelling of nonlinear strings, and which can be thought of as a perturbation of the classical linear wave equation which incorporates the basic idea of nonlinearity and dispersion. One first proves the global smoothing effect present in the Boussinesq equation, and then one studies the local well-posedness for the initial-value problem in a special case. A global existence result is established for small data, and finally, one presents some results related to the persistence properties and decay of solutions.
