This article considers Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows past a two-dimensional sphere. These equations are embedded on a torus into a reaction diffusion system for which the spectral gap condition is satisfied when the ratio of the two periods is a rational number. Absorbing sets and attractors for the embedded system are studied. An inertial manifold is obtained, and its dimension is estimated. The paper concludes with some remarks on flows past a torus and on the barotropic equation of the atmosphere.
