The author considers retarded functional differential equations of the form (1) \(\dot y(t) = Ly_ t + f(y_ t)\), \(y \in \mathbb{R}\), \(y_ t \in C : = C([-r,0, \mathbb{R})\). Under the assumptions that the linear equation (2) \(\dot y(t) = Ly_ t\) has \(N\) eigenvalues on the imaginary axis and \(f : C \to \mathbb{R}\) has a small Lipschitz constant, (1) has an \(N\)-dimensional invariant manifold (the center manifold). By a result of \textit{J. K. Hale} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. 101, 193-201 (1985; Zbl 0582.34058)], the flow of (1) on this manifold is represented by a scalar \(N\)-th order ODE (3) \(z^{(N)} + a_ 1z^{(N-1)} + \cdots + a_ Nz = g(z, \dots, z^{(N- 1)})\) where the coefficients \(a_ i\) are determined by (2) and \(g\) depends on \(f\). In the same paper, Hale stated that any (sufficiently small) nonlinearity \(g\) can be prescribed for (3) if an appropriate nonlinearity of the delay type, \(f(\varphi) = f (\varphi (0), \varphi (- r_ 1), \dots, \varphi (-r_{N_ 1})\) is chosen in (1). He also gave a proof that works for a weaker statement (any finite jet of \(g\) can be prescribed). In the paper under review, the author employs the Nash-Moser technique in order to show that the original statement of Hale holds true under some smoothness restrictions on \(g\). He also discusses various extensions of this result.
