Let \(\Gamma_1\) and \(\Gamma_2\) be discrete, virtually torsion-free groups with finite virtual cohomological dimension. \(({\mathbf F}_p)_\infty B\Gamma_i\) is the Bousfield-Kan \(p\)-completion of the classifying space of \(\Gamma_i\). The Quillen category of \(\Gamma_i\), \(Q_p (\Gamma_i)\), has as objects the finite \(p\)-subgroups of \(\Gamma_i\) and as morphisms the homomorphisms induced by conjugation by elements of \(\Gamma_i\). The principal theorem states that a weak homotopy equivalence \[ f: ({\mathbf F}_p)_\infty B \Gamma_1 \to ({\mathbf F}_p)_\infty B \Gamma_2 \] induces an equivalence of Quillen categories, \(Q_p (\Gamma_1)\) and \(Q_p (\Gamma_2)\). Corresponding isomorphism classes are isomorphic as abstract groups.
