The author gives an excellent introduction to mixed motives. The examples he discusses are constructed from cycles and elements in algebraic \(K\)-groups (\S 2), CM elliptic curves (\S 4), modular forms (\S 5), and certain Laurent polynomials in several variables (\S 6). The last example may be of interest for mathematicians working on dynamical systems: a particular Deligne period of a certain mixed motive has an interpretation as the entropy of a certain expansive \(\mathbb{Z}^n\)-action on a compact topological group.
