The authors consider the generation of analytic semigroups by degenerate elliptic operators satisfying a uniform Hörmander condition under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. First, they consider Morrey and Campanato spaces under the hypothesis that they are defined on an open subset of a connected locally compact space. Next, they study a differential operator which leads to a regular Dirichlet form. Relying on the general theory developed at the beginning of the paper, the squared Hörmander operator, as a special case of a Dirichlet form, is considered. Existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions of a proper differential equation are proved. At the end they consider applications and generalizations to operators in \(L^p\).
