The paper deals with multiplicity results for the semilinear elliptic problem \[ -\Delta u= f(u),\quad u_{\partial D}=0,\tag{1} \] where \(D\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) is a bounded domain with regular boundary \(\partial D\), \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) is \(C^1\), \(f(0)= 0\) and \(|f(u)|\leq c_1+ c_2|u|^p\), \(1\leq p<n^*\), \(n^*=(n+2)/(n- 2)\) if \(n\geq 3\) and \(n^*=\infty\) for \(n=1,2\). The authors continue their investigations [see J. Math. Anal. Appl. 189, No. 3, 848-871 (1995; Zbl 0834.35049)] and prove existence of sign-changing solutions of (1) using Morse decompositions. The main idea of the authors is to use Morse inequalities for Morse decompositions in the generalized Conley index theory.
