The authors discuss the relationship between the differential index [see, e.g., \textit{K. E. Brenan}, \textit{S. L. Campbell} and \textit{L. P. Petzold}, Numerical solution of initial-value problems in differential-algebraic equations. Classics in Applied Mathematics. 14. Philadelphia, PA: SIAM (1996; Zbl 0844.65058)] and the strangeness index [see \textit{P. Kunkel} and \textit{V. Mehrmann}, J. Comput Appl. Math. 56, No. 3, 225-251 (1994; Zbl 0824.34002)] for linear differential-algebraic equations of the form \[ E(t)x'= A(t)x+ f(t),\tag{1} \] where \(A, E\in C(I,\mathbb{C}^{n,n})\), \(f\in C(I,\mathbb{C}^n)\), \(I\subset\mathbb{R}\) a (closed) interval. They give new existence and uniqueness results for (1) as well as a new numerical algorithm for the solution of linear differential-algebraic equations.
