In this paper the author surveys recent (1985-1995) work in the history of the mathematical sciences in medieval Islam, including mathematics itself and the sciences of astronomy, astrology, cartography, optics, and music, where mathematics played an essential role. The survey is largely restricted to works published in North America or Europe and, in particular, refers neither to works published in the former Soviet Union nor to works entirely in Arabic. Although some cases have been noted in which a particular work has occasioned some critical comment this does not mean that all other work has been, or should be, accepted as established truth.
