The authors prove a general formula for the \(L^p\)-Lipschitz exponent of the compactly supported solution \(f\) of a given dilation equation \(f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^N c_n f(2x-n)\). In special cases (including the case of the Daubechies scaling function \(D_4\)) this formula reduces to a simple form. It is also shown that for an even integer \(p\) the \(L^p\)-Lipschitz exponent is related to the spectral radius of a \((p+1)\times (p+1)\) matrix whose entries depend on the coefficients \(c_n\).
