Let \(T(x)= K_1x \log^2x +K_2x \log x+K_3 x+\Delta (x)\), where \(T(x)\) denotes the number of subgroups of all abelian groups whose order does not exceed \(x\) and whose rank does not exceed 2, and \(\Delta (x)\) is the error term. Many mathematicians have considered the upper bound and the \(\Omega\)-result of \(\Delta (x)\). The object of the present paper is to investigate \(\Delta (x)\) in mean square. The author proves two fairly precise results: \[ \int^X_1 \Delta^2 (x)dx= O(X^2 (\log X)^{3 1/3}) \] and \[ \int^X_1 \Delta^2 (x)dx= \Omega (X^2 \log^4X). \]
