Discrete dynamical systems are considered. The authors present an elementary proof of the fact that the Conley index is a connected simple system. Instead of writing down explicit formulas for the isomorphisms they show that the inclusion relations between index pairs fully determine the structure of the Conley index as a connected simple system. As a by-product they obtain the fact that the Conley index is actually a functor.
