Let \(X_C\) denote the complexification of a real Banach space \(X\). The question of norming \(X_C\) is related to cross norms. It is shown that a norm is admissible (a natural condition) on \(X_C\) if and only if the norm is induced by a complex-homogeneous cross-norm on the tensor product \(X\otimes R^2\). Viewed as a real vector space, \(X_C\) is identified with \(X\otimes R^2\). Various examples are considered. For a Banach lattice \(E\), one often considers the norm on \(E_C\) defined by \(\|z\|=||\;|z|\;||\) which makes \(E_C\) a Banach lattice. It is established that this norm is induced by an \(l\)-norm on \(E\otimes R^2\), namely, a complex cross norm on \(E\otimes R^2\) induced by the operator ideal \(L^1(E^*; R^2)\) of cone absolutely summing operators.
