The authors give a number of results on \(\beta\)-expansions, i.e. greedy expansions with respect to an arbitrary non-integer base \(q>1\), thereby extending results that have been found for \(1<q<2\). In particular the uniqueness of the representation of 1 is investigated. Furthermore the authors answer a question on the existence of a so-called universal expansion, compare \textit{P. Erdős} and \textit{V. Komornik} [Acta. Math. Hung. 79, 57--83 (1998; Zbl 0906.11008)].
