Let \(H\) be a finite-dimensional Kac algebra which acts outerly on a \(II_1\) factor \(M\), and let \(M^H\) denote the algebra of fixed points of this action. This paper is concerned with the study of the finite-index inclusion \(M^H \subset M\). It is known that this inclusion encodes the representation theory of \(H\). The first part of the paper gives detailed and useful accounts on planar algebras, Kac algebras and crossed products of \(II_1\) factors by Kac algebras. The authors then study the Jones planar algebra [\textit{V. F. R. Jones}, Planar algebras I, preprint math.QA/9909027, N. Z. J. Math. (to appear)] associated with the inclusion \(M^H \subset M\). They provide two descriptions of this algebra in terms of generators and relations: one is basis free and features the Hopf algebra structure on \(H\), while the other is a finite presentation which depends on an orthogonal basis of \(H\).
