Let \(V\) be a vertex operator algebra of moonshine type. For a conformal vector \(e\) of central charge \(1/2\) in \(V\), the author [J. Algebra 179, No. 2, 523--548 (1996; Zbl 0964.17021)] defined an automorphism \(\tau_e\) of \(V\) of order 2. In the case of the moonshine vertex operator algebra \(V^\#\), \(\tau_e\) is a \(2A\) involution of the Monster simple group. Let \(f\) be another conformal vector of central charge \(1/2\) and assume that \(|\tau_e\tau_f|=3\). In the case of \(V^\#\), it is known by \textit{J. H. Conway} [Invent. Math. 79, 513--540 (1985; Zbl 0564.20010)] that \(\tau_e\tau_f\) is a \(3A\) or \(3C\) element and the inner product \(\langle e,f\rangle\) is \(13/2^{10}\) or \(1/2^8\) respectively. In this paper, the author studies the structure of the vertex algebra \(VA(e,f)\) generated by \(e\) and \(f\) in a vertex operator algebra \(V\) of moonshine type and shows that the only possible values of \(\langle e,f\rangle\) are \(13/2^{10}\) and \(1/2^8\). Moreover, it is shown that \(VA(e,f)\) is in fact a vertex operator algebra and that in the case where \(\langle e,f\rangle=13/2^{10}\), it has only four possible structures. Recently, \textit{S. Sakuma} and \textit{H. Yamauchi} [J. Algebra 267, No. 1, 272--297 (2003; Zbl 1046.17010)] determined the structure of \(VA(e,f)\). Furthermore, they construct \(VA(e,f)\) explicitly and establish an embedding of \(VA(e,f)\) into \(V^\#\). As a result, a \(3A\) element of the Monster simple group is obtained.
