Recently, by using a semigroup approach, \textit{A. Bátkai} and \textit{S. Piazzera} [Semigroup Forum 64, 71--80 (2002; Zbl 1007.47015)] have proved the equivalence of the well-posedness of a partial differential equation with nonautonomous past when the history function is defined on the interval \([-1, 0]\) and an associated abstract Cauchy problem. This equivalence is then used to derive sufficient conditions for exponential stability of the solutions. In this paper the authors prove similar results for a nonautonomous generalized partial differential equation with history function defined on the interval \((-\infty, 0]\). Note also that the existence of mild solutions for such partial differential equations has been proved recently by \textit{S. Brendle} and \textit{R. Nagel} [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 8, 953--966 (2002; Zbl 1013.35080)].
