This paper is concerned with the difference between the solution \(u\) of the abstract dissipative wave equation \(u'' + u' +Au=0, \;u(0) =u_0 , \;u'(0) =u_1,\) and the solution \(v\) of the abstract heat equation \(v' + Av =0, \;v(0) =u_0+u_1.\) The operator \(A\) is assumed to be a closed, selfadjoint, positive semidefinite operator on a separable Hilbert space. The main result obtained in this paper is a positive answer to the conjecture by \textit{R. Ikehata} and \textit{K. Nishihara} [J. Differ. Equations 186, No. 2, 633--651 (2002; Zbl 1017.35059), Stud. Math. 158, 153--161 (2003; Zbl 1029.35186)] on an estimate of the order \(O(t^{-1})\).
